About the club
Club Atlético Banfield was born on 25 May 1941 in the Puerto district of Mar del Plata, in a neighbourhood of mostly Spanish families then known as Barrio Nuevo. The founders had neither a pitch nor a ball: they trained on the grounds of the Sagrada Familia church whenever it was free and played with a ball lent by the local River. In their first match they turned out as Defensores de Termas Huinco, but the crowd shouted "Banfield" because they looked like the Buenos Aires club whose green and white they had adopted, and the name stuck for good.
They joined the Liga Marplatense in 1956, won promotion in 1959 and survived a failed merger with Aldosivi and Talleres in 1976. The Puerto's Taladro won the league in 2001, 2004 and 2016, produced Matías Vuoso, Diego Galeano and Nahuel Yeri, and keeps more than 500 kids in football in one of the city's hardest neighbourhoods.
