About the club
Omonia was born of a telegram. In 1948, with the Greek Civil War raging, APOEL's board endorsed a condemnation of the communist revolt, and the club's left leaning players, sidelined or expelled, founded a new club on 4 June, named after the Greek word for concord. The green shamrock became the club of the Cypriot people: the Queen counts 21 championships, with a superteam that won 14 titles between 1970 and 1989 and finished champions or runners up fourteen seasons in a row. The derby with APOEL, played at the very GSP the two share, remains the match of the eternal enemies, politics included. In 2018, privatisation drove the Gate 9 ultras to found their own Omonia 1948; the original answered with the 2021 title.
