About the club

Leicester has two Welford Roads: at the city one play the Tigers, ten times champions of England, and at the one in Wigston Magna play South Leicester, in green and white hoops, so mind which one you pin on the map. Founded in 1919, in the aftermath of the Great War, the club settled in Wigston in 1960 and became one of the county's great nurseries. These are the fields crossed by the family that changed English rugby: the Tuilagis, the Samoan clan settled in Wigston that gave six brothers to Leicester Tigers and to England, and whose next generation, led by Fred Tuilagi in 2015/16, kept making South the first step. The 2010s took the first XV up to National League 2 North, the fourth tier of English rugby, before a brutal fall in 2019, with a player exodus and a restart in the county leagues. The club answered the way neighbourhood clubs do: minis, juniors, a women's section and a full house on Saturdays. Falls pass, nurseries remain.
