About the club
Sporting Clube da Praia was born on 2 December 1923 as Sporting Clube de Cabo Verde, Sporting Lisbon's filial nº 20, and in 1952 merged with Rápido Clube da Praia to take the name and shape it keeps today. It is one of the Cape Verdean capital's big three, alongside Travadores and Académica, with whom it shares the Estádio da Várzea. It won the colonial championship three times before independence (1960/61, 1968/69, 1973/74) and the national championship nine times as a free nation, between 1985 and 2012.
The nickname says it all about its place in the city: Lion di Kapital, the Lion of the Capital, in Crioulo.
