About the club
Sporting Clube Ferreirense was born on 30 June 1955 in Ferreira do Alentejo, and its founder could hardly be more unlikely: the village priest, José Mendes Alcobia. A remarkable figure who had arrived at the parish in 1944, he also founded the Externato Nuno Álvares school and spent decades collecting and studying cante alentejano, the region’s traditional singing, alongside Fernando Lopes Graça and Michel Giacometti, leaving thousands of hours of recordings. The village club grew from that same cultural soil.
Over the following decades, Ferreirense became one of the historic names of the Beja Football Association, winning regional titles across several levels through cycles of pauses and rebirths stitched together by figures like Nando, player, coach and director. In 2005, on its 50th anniversary, the club received the Medal for Distinguished Services to Sport. Today it plays at the Estádio Municipal, always with a lion on its chest.
