About the club
Werder was born on 4 February 1899 in the Hanseatic city of Bremen and carries the river in its name: a Werder is a river islet, the one by the Weser where the club first played and where the Weserstadion still stands. The green and whites are one of German football's historic giants: four titles (1965, 1988, 1993 and 2004, the last a double under Thomas Schaaf), six German Cups and the 1992 Cup Winners' Cup, with the Rehhagel era making the club a power and Diego, Özil and Pizarro adding shine this century.
