About the country

Greek football is made of absolute passions: Athens against Piraeus, Panathinaikos' trefoil against record champions Olympiacos, with AEK, PAOK and Aris ensuring no derby is small, in some of Europe's most intense stands. Among clubs, the greatest night remains Wembley 1971, the European final of Puskás' Panathinaikos. With the national team, the unthinkable happened: at Euro 2004, Otto Rehhagel's Greece beat Portugal in the opening match and again in the final, in Lisbon, Charisteas' header sealing the greatest miracle in European Championship history. A country that is rarely the favourite and has proved, precisely because of that, that it can achieve anything.
