Yemen keeps one of Asian football's oldest secrets: it was in Aden, a port of the British empire, that Al-Tilal was born in 1905, the oldest club in the entire Arabian peninsula. For decades there were two Yemens and two footballs, North and South, unified in 1990 into a single league ruled by the clubs of Sanaa and Aden. The national team has never reached a World Cup, but debuted at the Asian Cup in 2019, and the greatest achievement is invisible in the statistics: keeping football alive through one of the century's most devastating wars, with suspended leagues, wounded stadiums and fans who never stopped turning up.
