If one shirt made horizontal stripes famous around the world, it is Celtic's. Glasgow's green-and-white hoops are probably the most recognisable striped shirt in football.

From 1888 to the hoops

Celtic were founded in 1888 in Glasgow, with charitable roots in the city's Irish community. In the early years they wore vertical stripes; it was in 1903 that they adopted the horizontal hoops, and never let them go.

An identity across generations

More than a century later, the hoops remain almost untouchable: sponsors, makers and details change, but the horizontal green and white stays. That consistency is what makes the Celtic shirt a case study for collectors.
