Celtic Football Club

Celtic were born in 1887 in a parish hall in Glasgow's East End, founded by Brother Walfrid, an Irish Marist, with a purpose set down in writing: to raise money to feed the children of the city's poorest Irish immigrants. From that charitable origin grew a giant. The green and white hoops arrived in 1903 and never left, Celtic Park became one of European football's cathedrals, and in 1967 the unthinkable happened: the Lisbon Lions, eleven players born within 50 kilometres of Glasgow, beat Inter Milan at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon to make Celtic the first British club to win the European Cup. With more than fifty Scottish championships, a record number of Scottish Cups and the eternal arm wrestle with Rangers in the Old Firm, the fiercest derby in the British Isles, Celtic are at once a club, a community and a cause. Few crests anywhere carry so much identity in two colours.
