Borussia Mönchengladbach

In the 1970s no team in Europe was more electrifying than Borussia Mönchengladbach. Founded in 1900 in the Rhineland city, the club exploded under Hennes Weisweiler with an unrepeatable generation, Günter Netzer, Berti Vogts, Rainer Bonhof, Jupp Heynckes and the Dane Allan Simonsen, that seized five Bundesliga titles in nine years, two UEFA Cups and reached the 1977 European Cup final, lost to Liverpool in Rome. They played so fast and so young that the press called them the Fohlenelf, the eleven foals, a nickname the club wears on its collars to this day. Eternal rivals Bayern won the long war, and the Foals knew leaner decades, including relegation, before the rebirth at Borussia-Park, the modern stadium that in 2004 replaced the mythical, tiny Bökelberg. Black, white and green, one curious record, the biggest win in Bundesliga history, a 12-0 over Dortmund in 1978, and the certainty that no German team has aged better in the memory: the Foals run forever.
