Ferencváros

In Hungary football has many chapels and one cathedral: Ferencváros. Born in 1899 in Budapest's ninth district, Fradi are the country's most decorated and best supported club, the team of the green eagles that turns every season without a championship into a national crisis. The European peak came in 1965, when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by beating Juventus 1-0 in Turin itself, still the only European trophy in Hungarian club football, and two years later Flórián Albert, the supremely elegant forward who never wore another shirt, received the only Ballon d'Or in Magyar history. There was also a Cup Winners' Cup final in 1975 and decades of domestic dominance interrupted by dramatic falls, including an administrative relegation in 2006 that the fanbase turned into an epic journey back. Today they play at the Groupama Aréna, raised on the very site of the old Üllői út ground, and are once again regulars in European group stages. Green and white for more than a century and a quarter: in Budapest, football and Fradi are the same word.
