About the country

No country invented as much football off the pitch: FIFA was born in Paris in 1904, Jules Rimet created the World Cup, Henri Delaunay designed the Euros, Gabriel Hanot's L'Équipe gave birth to the European Cup and France Football invented the Ballon d'Or. On the pitch it took longer: Platini's Euro 1984 opened the way, Zidane's home World Cup in 1998 sealed it and 2018 with Mbappé confirmed a superpower. Among clubs, the Marseille of 1993 remain France's only European champions and green belongs to the Verts of Saint-Étienne, the dynasty of the seventies. But the first champion green was another one: that of FC Sète, authors of the first double in French history.
