No Sporting home shirt had ever carried this much black, and few carried a season this full. It began as a stroll: Rúben Amorim's team steamrolled the league and on 5 November 2024 produced a European spectacle, a 4-1 win over Guardiola's Manchester City with a Gyökeres hat-trick. It was a farewell gift: days later, Amorim left for Manchester United with the title defence unfinished. There followed João Pereira's troubled interim spell and the arrival of Rui Borges in late December, to secure a championship only decided on the final matchday, with Benfica breathing down Sporting's neck to the very end. With the 21st title sealed, the season closed in gold at the Jamor, the Taça de Portugal won against the rivals from Luz in extra time to complete the double. It was also Viktor Gyökeres's goodbye, 54 goals in an impossible season before joining Arsenal. A dark shirt for a luminous year, proof that at Sporting even chromatic heresies are forgiven when they end with two trophies on the chest.
