About the club

Sporting Clube de Portugal were born in 1906 in Lisbon through José Alvalade and the grandfather who funded the dream, with an ambition declared at birth: to be a great club, as great as Europe's greatest. The lion on the chest became one of Portuguese football's three colossi, serial national champions since the 1940s, owners of the glorious era of the Five Violins and winners of the 1964 Cup Winners' Cup, the European trophy in their museum. But perhaps the club's greatest pride isn't in the cabinets at all: no institution in the world has produced so much talent per square metre, from Futre to Figo, from Cristiano Ronaldo to Bruno Fernandes, all lions before they were stars. Green and white hoops, Alvalade for a home and a century of mastery in making footballers: that is Sporting.
