About the country

Austria was one of continental football's first powers. In the 1930s, the Wunderteam of Hugo Meisl and Matthias Sindelar dazzled Europe, born of a Viennese coffee house culture that debated football the way it debated opera. The country finished third at the 1954 World Cup and treasures the 3-2 over Germany in Córdoba in 1978, a national myth to this day. It also gave the game Ernst Happel, winner of two European Cups as a coach and the name on the national stadium in Vienna. The league spent decades ruled by the capital's giants, Rapid and Austria, before the recent era belonged to Red Bull Salzburg. In green and white hoops, the flag bearer is Rapid, the country's most decorated club.
