The story

Umbro dressed Ireland's away in white with thin green pinstripes, the FAI shamrock on the chest and eircom, the national telecom, in orange and grey across the middle. Discreet and elegant, it looked designed for quiet nights. It got the opposite.

Trapattoni's Ireland wore it in the second leg of the 2010 World Cup playoff, on 18 November 2009 at the Stade de France. Robbie Keane scored, 1-0, extra time, and in the 103rd minute the ball touched Henry's hand twice before Gallas' goal. The FAI asked for a replay and even for a place as the World Cup's 33rd team, and years later it emerged that FIFA had quietly paid five million in settlement.

Here at Hoopster this is the archive's third national team, and it arrives with modern football's most famous injustice clinging to its back.
