The story

Some shirts carry more weight than others, and this one carried 18 years. Sporting had not been champions since 1981/82 when the 1999/00 season began, their second with Reebok, who delivered a design with black trim on collar and cuffs and a tonal pattern weaving the word "Sporting" in script alongside the brand's vector logo through the fabric. On the chest, Telecel in its final season before giving way to PT. The start was bad enough to cost Giuseppe Materazzi his job, but under Augusto Inácio the team staged a remarkable recovery and reached the final matchday, on 14 May 2000, with 74 points and a one point lead over an FC Porto side chasing a sixth straight title. At the Vidal Pinheiro, against a Salgueiros team fighting relegation, the answer was a 4-0 win with two goals from André Cruz, Schmeichel in goal and Acosta up front. The drought ended there, and this shirt became forever the one that brought the titles back to Alvalade. Until 2025, it was the last time Sporting were crowned champions on the final day.

Here at Hoopster this is the shirt that lifted an eighteen year drought, on a final day of pounding hearts at the Vidal Pinheiro. Some hoops are not remembered, they are celebrated.
