Sporting Clube de Portugal 2019/20 Home Shirt

MCMVI on the collar, 1906 in Roman numerals: Macron filled this shirt with references to the club's foundation in a season when Sporting were searching for a refoundation of their own. And what a season. Marcel Keizer sacked in September, Silas passing through, Bruno Fernandes sold to Manchester United in January for a record fee, and in March, with football about to stop for the pandemic, a 35 year old coach signed from Braga for silly money to general laughter: Rúben Amorim. The league ended in fourth place, played out in empty stadiums, outside even the Champions League spots, and nobody in the summer of 2020 would have said it had been the beginning of anything. It was. With Amorim came the kids, with the kids came the structure, and the following season ended with the title that had been slipping away since 2002. This is a hinge shirt: the last of the old Sporting, the first of the Sporting to come. The fine textured hoops and the Macron logo shaped notch in the collar are handsome. What it marks is even better.
